Over the years of working with small businesses, I've found a number of common issues. One of the biggest complaints I've heard is: "you can't get good people anymore." Maybe you've heard this lament before. Maybe you've said it yourself. And while on the surface it can be true, I'd say 80% of the time it misses the mark. Most often what I've found is that the employees don't have any sort of job description. Without a job description and a list of duties that are needed to be done, neither the owner or employee knows what they are responsible for. And with a competent employee, this often results in an excited boss shifting into "delegation mode" and piling on more and more work. When I questioned one owner about this, she said "didn't think it was a big deal." After I got her to write out all the employee's current job duties and saw the size of the list, she quickly realized why her employee was making mistakes and things...

A lab coat and some fake credentials do not a Dr make. In Florida, an 18 year old boy was arrested after giving physical exams and medical advice to people. He had opened his own "holistic medical clinic" and even gave himself made up credentials. Of course he gave himself a Ph.D., but nobody's quite sure what “HHP-C” and an “AMP-C" stand for. This wasn't the first time he'd been caught either. About a year earlier, he was caught pretending to be a Dr in a hospital as he peeked in on gynecology exams. Apparently he kept a number of different lab coats in his car, depending on the costume he needed at the time. Sounds like a creepier version of the movie "Catch Me if You Can" with Leonardo Dicaprio. Same thing holds true with all the self-proclaimed biz dev experts out there. How many of them have actually spent time working ON or IN a business? Or did they just whip up some cool sounding credentials to b...

I read about a Swedish project that is trying to convert people's under-utilized homes into temporary co-working spaces, available to freelancers for free. So, if you were to do this, you would have people who are unable/unwilling to pay for office space using your home. They could use THEIR OWN home, but they just don't want to. How well do you think you would get along with these people? Do you think they would be incredibly hard-working and focused? Or would they just goof off and distract everyone else as they don't have any overhead or investment to worry about? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that you should probably check with your wife before you quit your day job to become a freelancer who opens up your home to other freelancers looking for free working spaces. I'm not against charity, but if it's business-related you need to have and follow a plan to profit. Here's the solution: http://bizdevshot...

Not long ago, I read an article about a mansion in Florida. Apparently it had been owned by Pablo Escobar. And when the new owner decided to tear it down to build a new one, he found not one... but TWO safes inside the mansion. When I heard about this, they hadn't opened them yet... but can you imagine the anticipation? It would be like Christmas morning excitement for adults! What's in it? Money? Guns? Drugs? The location to fields full of buried cash in Columbia? Who knows? Maybe it's something - maybe it's nothing. But if it were your safe....you'd HAVE to check it out. I find it can be the same way for me when it comes to online advertising. I almost HAVE to check just about any and every method I come across. Because who knows? You might just strike gold. Here's one of the best methods I've run into: http://bizdevshots.com/solution/ Matt Hardy BizDevShots Podcast BossInter...
